Arsi paruppu sadham / dhal rice

A simple easy dish for a lazy or relaxing day or when there is no mind set to cook but have to cook. It can be made quickly when there is sudden burst of unexpected guests and never fails to capture the hearts .


Serves 3 to 4 persons

Cooking time : 30 minutes.


Ingredients :

Rice 1 cup

Turdhal / channa dhal ½ cup


To season :

Oil &ghee 2 - 3 tbs

Turmeric ¼ tsp

Onions I [ chopped]

Green chilly 3 [slit ]

Curry leaves 8 to 10 nos

Red chilly 1 broken

Coconut 3- 4 tbs[to taste /optional grated ]

Mustard 1/4 tsp

Urad dhal 1/4 tsp

Salt to taste

Chopped coriander leaves [to garnish ]


Method :

Wash and soak the dhal and rice together for minimum 15 minutes.

In a pressure pan or cooker heat oil add mustard when it splutters , add dhal when its brown, add chilles , curry leaves, onions ,let it turn brown then add water approximately 4 cups and then the washed dhal rice , salt, turmeric ,coconut .Mix well close the lid and let it cook in pressure on slow flame for 10 to 15 min. Release the pressure and gently mix the rice .Check if water has retained at the bottom ,if so close and cook it for 5 to 10 min depending on the amount of water remaining .

Serve hot with ghee / clarified butter /seasames /gingelly oil.The traditional combo is finely chopped small onions/ pulli kulambu/ lime pickle / papad .

Combination of ghee and oil is used in seasoning to enhance the aroma and flavour.
