Panjami (Banana/Pazham Halwa)

Updated: Oct 31, 2020

This dish is one of the most exquisite dish in my moms authentic culinary skill. My mom would call it

"ANJU NIMISCHAM" in Tamil.

It never goes wrong and it is always a huge hit whenever I make it. Another big advantage of this delicacy is all the ingredients will be always in stock in one's kitchen made. It can be quickly made when you have a sudden sweet tooth or when guests take you by surprise. It is very flavorful when we get to use ripe POOVAN PALLAM (a particular variety of banana) which is easily available in Tamil Nadu. Of course you can use any other variety of ripe bananas too. But I would always prefer using Poovan Pallam when available.

Serves : 4 people

Cooking Time : 5 to 10 min

Ingredients :

Maida (all purpose flour) -1 cup

Sugar(white) -1 cup

Milk -1 cup

Desi ghee -1 cup

Raisins and Cashew - to garnish

Cardamon Powder - to taste

Ripe Bananas -2 or 3 (cut into pieces)

Method :

In a heavy bottomed kadai, add a table spoon ghee and fry the raisins and cashew and keep aside.

In the same ghee, add maida and fry on low flame till a nice aroma comes or rather till the raw smell leaves.

Now we can add the other ingredients (maida, sugar, milk , and half of the remaining ghee) and cook on low flame , stirring it till the mixture leaves the sides of the pan and switch off the flame.

We can keep adding ghee if and when the mixture sticks to the sides .Now we can add the cut banana pieces , fried cashew , raisins and cardamon powder and mix well .

The yummy halwa is ready to serve. Serve hot.

This is one of the easiest and quickest deserts which can never go wrong.
