Black Chickpea is a versitle lentil which can be used to make a lot of dishes.

Black chickpea masala is very renonwed in southern part of India.This recipe is popular in the kerala households.In my school days a friend of mine would bring it for lunch every single week .That was how iis incorparated in our househols menu.This serves as a bystander when vegetables run short in the pantry or days when no mood to cook.

Ingredients ;-

  • Chickpea 1 cup(soaked overnight)
  • To season:-
  • Onions 2-3 tbsp(chopped)
  • Garlic 2-3 (crushed)
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Coconut 2-3 tbsp(grated)
  • Chilli powder ¼ -1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut oil 1-11/2tbsp

Method :-

  • Cook the chickpea with 2-3 cups of water for 5-6 whistles till soft.
  • Strain the water in a colander ,set aside.
  • In a heavy bottomed pan heat oil.
  • Throw in onions, garlic &curry leaves, allow it to get translucent.
  • Add the cooked peas, chilli powder ,salt &give it a good mix.
  • Keep tossing on slow flame till raw smell leaves.
  • Add coconut and give it a good mix.
  • Serve hot with rice.

Note :-

Cow peas, green gram , hoarse gram can also be made in this way.
