A simple Rasam but very tasty !!

The masala which is used in this is usually made for a mutton or chicken gravy ,but my grand mother used the same masala ,added some tangy tomato and tamarind and made a yummy Rasam to feed her family which got together for a festivity .Of course all of used to love it .

Ingredients :

  • Mustard ¼ tsp
  • Urad dhal ¼ tsp
  • Small onion 4-5 ( chopped )
  • Garlic 2-3 ( crushed )
  • Tomato 1 ( chopped )
  • Tamarind extract 1 small cup
  • Turmeric ¼ tsp
  • Asafoetida ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Coriander leaves to garnish
  • Ghee 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Fry in oil & Grind :
  • Red chilly 2
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Small Onions 3 – 4
  • Coriander Seeds ¾ tsp
  • Castor Oil ½ – ¾ tsp

Method :

  • In a kadai heat oil add red chilly ,curry leaves and toss.
  • Add onions and let it brown.
  • Add coriander seeds and fry well ,till an aroma comes.
  • Grind it to a paste.
  • In a pan heat ghee ,throw in mustard ,urad dhal ,let it splutter.
  • Add onions and garlic and toss.
  • Add tomato and toss till it gets mushy.
  • Add the tamarind extract and let it boil and get a little thick.
  • Add the ground paste with water ( ½ – 1 cup approx. ) and allow it to boil till raw smell subsides.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice and papad.
