Black Channa Masala / Kadalai Masala

This is a delicious protein rich masala ,which is a luscious treat to the taste buds and never can go wrong dish. Also it is always a dish where one will always go for the second helping .This is a good option for a vegetarian spread.

Ingredients:

  • Kadalai 150 gms (soaked overnight )
  • Onion 1 ( chopped )
  • Tomato 1 ( chopped )
  • Red chilly 1or 2 ( optional )
  • Mustard or cinnamon 1/4 tsp or 1”
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Oil 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Fry in oil and grind to paste :

  • Shallots 10 -15
  • Red chilly 10
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Coriander powder 1 -11/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
  • Asafoetida ¼ tsp
  • Coconut 2-3 tbsp ( grated )

Method :

  • Pressure cook the soaked kadalai or kala channa for 5 -6 whistles.
  • Drain the water and keep aside.
  • In a pan heat oil add mustard or cinnamon. Let it splutter.
  • Add onions ,red chilly and curry leaves ,let it change colour.
  • Add tomato and let it get mushy.
  • Add the ground paste and fry for a bit.
  • Add the cooked dhal with some water and salt ,give it a good mix. Let it cook till raw smell fades away. Choose the consistency you require and switch off the flame.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice/chapatti.
