Karaikudi one of the towns of the down south which is well known for its awesome ,delicious food and diamonds.

Karaikudi Kari Kuzhambu otherwise Mutton Curry in an authentic version is simply delicious .

This recipe was incorporated from one of the house helps of our household in my childhood days. Though that was too long a time ,the recipe was always remembered ,and stays as one of the favourite too.

Karaikudi Kari Kuzhambu is made with authentic species which is always available in the kitchen , but gives a splendid taste to the taste buds.

Ingredients :

  • Mutton 500 gms
  • Mustard ¼ tsp
  • Urad dhal ¼ tsp
  • Small onions 6-7 ( chopped )
  • Red chilly 2
  • Curry leaves a few
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

Fry in oil & grind :

  • Red chilly 7
  • Small onions 15 nos
  • Ginger 1”
  • Garlic 4 pearls
  • Turmeric ¼ tsp
  • Fennel ¾ – 1 tsp
  • Coriander seeds 1 tbsp
  • Coconut 2 tbsp ( grated )
  • Oil 1 tsp

Method :

  • In a pressure cooker heat oil ,throw in mustard ,let it splutter.
  • Throw in urad dhal ,let it splutter.
  • Add onions and red chilly ,let it change colour.
  • Add the meat and toss well.
  • Add the ground paste and give a mix.
  • Add water ( 1 – 2 cups ) & salt ,give it a mix.
  • Close & cook under pressure .(approx. 10 -15 min )
  • Wait for the pressure to released ,open the lid.
  • Cook till raw smell leaves.
  • Throw in curry leaves.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice / idly / dosa.
